Thank you so much for my first painting lesson. I feel quite emotional, mostly because I regret that I didn’t do this decades ago! Well, there’s no time like the present…

Halcyon Day at Kevin McSherry's Gold Leaf Art Workshop in Dublin

Kevin McSherry art students gold leaf icons workshop Dublin
Kevin McSherry and students at gold leaf art workshop in Dublin
Look what flew in...
We had such a great day at my gold leafing icons art workshop in my studio. The weather was beautiful and when we broke for lunch, we all headed down the road to find a bite eat and sit in the sun. Then we had the last leg to complete; finish the gilding and make good the painting. That's the great thing about acrylics: you can take home a dry painting.

Thank you to all those who attended. Do keep an eye out for the next workshop at the tab above.

If you're new around here, you can sign up to receive my email newsletter where you can learn about upcoming events. Just fill in the form on the left-hand panel.

Talk soon,

Kevin

Art Workshop: Gilded 'Nature Icons'. May 13

A full day SUNDAY tutored workshop in painting and gilding 'Nature Icons'.

11.00AM to 4.45PM

with a one hour lunch break. 8 places ONLY.

These gilded paintings are like jewels -they catch the eye with the richness of the colours and lustre of the gilding. They're reminiscent of Byzantine religious icons and they sanctify these beautiful creatures. Using imitation Gold leaf, you'll get an insight into how it can bring a stunning new dimension into your art work.

As in all my classes, I'll demonstrate as we go along through the process and all participants will get personal attention throughout the day.

To speed up the painting process, I'll provide a selection of photographic references and templates. I will provide paint, boards and gilding materials. We will be working with ACRYLICS ONLY for this workshop.
We’ll cover the following:
  • Preparation and composition
  • Drawing the figure
  • Painting the composition
  • Gilding
  • Refining and completion

Portrait Workshop in Rathmines

We all had a marvellous time at our Portraits in Oils Workshop in Rathmines' new art shop, Artmines. Another diverse and amazing bunch of people! Our live model was Mathilde, with her current hair colour of purple. We all trooped over to Fallon & Byrne's for lunch -how civilised is that? I will be holding another weekend portraiture workshop soon at the same venue; I hope to see you there.

Why not sign up for my classes and workshop newsletter and be informed about the latest activities? See the message panel at left <<.

A Perfect Composition in Cotignac

Happy Cotignac couple two-up on a Vespa in a flower-filled sunny Provençal street
Perfection: A happy Cotignac couple two-up on a Vespa in a flower-filled sunny Provençal street
While Cathy and I were out for a lunch en famille in Cotignac village, I turned the corner of a sunny street and encountered this delightful Provençal scene. This couple were just about to take off and I managed to get a couple of words in with the lady. These two are obviously Vespa enthusiasts, so I told them about my own machine back home in Dublin. As they pulled away, she even gave me a cheery wave. They know they look cool...and I love the matching helmets. This is the life we want, eh? This composition includes most of the elements I wish for: Colour, sunny aspects, a harmonious relationship and Italian scooter design! I wish I'd had the presence of mind to ask them their names.

When I first saw this little street, while out searching for likely spots to take my painting students, I thought there must be a flower seller there but it turns out that the owner just likes a lot of flowers -and also doesn't want cars parking in front of his house; hence, the large pots at the roadside.

We had an exquisite meal at the Restaurant du Cours (highly recommended) and then back to base for more painting.

Cotignac in sunny Provence is gorgeous and it's the perfect spot for a painting en plein air holiday -if you'd like to join us in September, or next May, take a look here for my 7 day workshops, based in the lovely nearby villa of Le Clé.

Bring Boards or canvases of no smaller than 10" x 14" -around 16" x 20" would be fine.  A good idea would be to grey them out beforehand to save time.

  • Titanium White
  • Yellow ochre
  • Cadmium Yellow

General Information This week is aimed at all painters from near beginners to intermediate painters who want to enjoy painting en plein air in a beautiful environment with guidance and improve their painting technique.

With over one hectare of land, and approached via a long tree-lined avenue, the house “La Clé” slowly reveals itself as a charming house secluded and spacious with 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, and sitting on mature grounds with its grove of olive trees and wooded area.

The house is a really beautiful villa, up in the hills, overlooking the quaint and beautiful village of Cotignac, a 10 minute walk away from excellent restaurants, craft shops and a Boulangerie with crusty breads to die for. The villa has been completely renovated but is still a lovely old building full of charm, tastefully decorated and furnished with nooks and crannies everywhere so that everyone can find their own little space in this wonderful place.
There is also a 6mX12 m pool in travertine stone and plenty of comfortable deckchairs to relax and chill…

But the pièce de resistance is the view from the terrace at night, down into the village with the twinkly lights. Good for the soul! Lovely walks and vineyards …The beautiful town square which is only a short walk away has plenty of restaurants to cater for all tastes and are very reasonable. There is even singing & dancing in the square in the evenings...

The town boasts wonderful examples of architecture, ranging from the 12th to the 18th centuries.

We will paint for 5 days allowing one day off to explore the beautiful surrounding area.

    From Wikipedia:

    Sunflowers, friendship and gratitude[edit]

Paul Gauguin: The Painter of Sunflowers, 1888
Van Gogh began painting in late summer 1888 and continued into the following year. One went to decorate his friend Paul Gauguin's bedroom. The paintings show sunflowers in all stages of life, from full bloom to withering. The paintings were considered innovative for their use of the yellow spectrum, partly because newly invented pigments made new colours possible.
In a letter to Theo,[16] Vincent wrote:
"It's a type of painting that changes its aspect a little, which grows in richness the more you look at it. Besides, you know that Gauguin likes them extraordinarily. He said to me about them, among other things: ‘that — ... that's... the flower’. You know that Jeannin has the peony, Quost has the hollyhock, but I have the sunflower, in a way."[17]

A Series of Impromptu Art Classes in my Studio in Terenure Dublin

The year has officially ended as regards the 6 week terms. Over the years, I've learned that it's difficult for people to commit to a whole 6 week  course. With that in mind, I'm organising a series of ad hoc classes - They're run in the mornings, just like the term classes but you only need to commit to each one individually. They're €30 per class and payment is ONLINE ONLY. I can't take verbal confirmations as it's so difficult to replace someone who drops out at the last minute. I hope you understand.

As usual, there will be a demonstration at each class and I'll help you to achieve a good result. There'll be tea or coffee and biscuits too, to keep you going!

Looking forward to seeing you there. You can see and pay for the current list of classes here: http://mcsherrystudio.bigcartel.com/

You can find a map and a list of materials required in the tabs above.
